Career & Skills Development

Career & Skills Development

Everyone deserves work that pays fairly, fits their life, and gives them something to feel good about. Whether you’re stepping into the workforce for the first time, returning after time away, or ready to move in a completely new direction, we’re here to help you get there. Not with a one-size-fits-all approach, but with real, practical support built around where you are and where you want to go.

Why This Work Matters

Access to meaningful employment changes everything. It affects housing stability, mental health, family wellbeing, and a person’s sense of purpose and independence. In Nunavut, the path to employment can come with added complexity — geographic barriers, limited local opportunities in certain fields, gaps in formal training, and systems that weren’t always designed with northern communities in mind.

We take all of that seriously. Our goal isn’t just to help people find any job. It’s to help people build careers they can sustain and grow, on their own terms, with skills that belong to them permanently.

Job Readiness Training

Before anything else, you need to feel prepared. That confidence doesn’t come from nowhere — it comes from knowing what to expect, having practiced the right things, and understanding how to present yourself clearly and honestly to a potential employer. Our job readiness training is designed to do exactly that.

· Resume writing support that helps you identify and communicate your experience in a way that actually gets noticed

· Cover letter guidance tailored to specific industries and roles rather than generic templates

· Interview preparation including mock interviews, common questions, and honest feedback in a low-pressure setting

· Support understanding job postings, applications, and what employers are genuinely looking for

· Coaching on professional communication, workplace expectations, and how to navigate the first weeks in a new role

We work at your pace. If you’ve never written a resume before or if you’re updating one after years out of the workforce, we meet you at your starting point without judgment.

Skills Workshops Across Industries

The economy in Nunavut is changing, and so are the opportunities available to people who live here. Our skills workshops are designed to keep up with that reality and to give participants hands-on, practical training that employers actually value.

Workshops span a range of industries and skill areas including:

· Trades and construction fundamentals

· Administrative and office skills including computer literacy and software basics

· Healthcare and community support roles

· Retail, hospitality, and customer service

· Financial literacy and small business basics for those interested in entrepreneurship

· Safety certifications and industry-specific credentials that open doors to local employment

Workshops are offered in accessible formats, in communities across the territory where possible, and in both official languages. We update our offerings regularly based on what local employers need and what community members are asking for.

Career Mentorship and Networking

Knowing what you want to do is one thing. Knowing how to get there, and having someone in your corner who has already walked a similar path, is something else entirely. Mentorship is one of the most valuable things we offer, and we don’t treat it as an afterthought.

· Participants are matched with mentors working in fields they’re genuinely interested in pursuing

· Mentorship relationships focus on real guidance, honest career advice, and connections that actually lead somewhere

· Networking opportunities connect job seekers with local employers, industry representatives, and hiring decision-makers

· We facilitate conversations that would otherwise be hard to access, especially for those without an existing professional network

· Mentors are drawn from Nunavut’s own workforce wherever possible, so the guidance is grounded in local knowledge and context

For many people, it isn’t a lack of ability that holds them back — it’s a lack of connection to the right opportunities. We work to close that gap.

Job Placement Support

Getting hired is a process, and the period between finishing training and landing a job can be one of the most discouraging stretches of the whole journey. We stay involved during that time rather than stepping back once the workshop ends.

· Ongoing job search support including help identifying opportunities and managing applications

· Direct connections to employers who are actively hiring and open to working with our participants

· Assistance navigating hiring processes, background checks, and onboarding requirements

· Support for participants entering fields where additional licensing or certification may be required

· Follow-up check-ins once employment begins so that people don’t feel abandoned the moment they get the job

We celebrate every placement, and we stay available long after the celebration is over.

Support for Every Stage

Career development doesn’t look the same for everyone, and we don’t pretend it does. Some people come to us with a clear goal and just need help closing a few specific gaps. Others are starting from a more uncertain place and need support figuring out what direction even makes sense. Both of those are completely valid starting points, and we are equipped to work with both.

· First-time job seekers who need foundational support and confidence-building

· People re-entering the workforce after a gap due to caregiving, health, or personal circumstances

· Individuals looking to upgrade their skills and move into higher-paying or more stable roles

· Community members interested in starting a small business or exploring self-employment

· Those facing barriers to employment who need a more supported, individualized path forward

Whatever your situation, the conversation starts with you telling us where you’re at. We go from there.

More Than a Job

We want to be honest about what we’re actually working toward. A job matters. A paycheque matters. But what we’re really trying to support is a life with more stability, more options, and more room to grow. When someone lands a job that fits them well and gives them financial independence, the effects spread outward into their family, their household, and their community.

That ripple effect is what this work is really about.
