Community Members Show Off Handmade Parkas from Ubluriak Society’s Sewing Program

If you’ve been on Facebook lately, you might have seen some proud posts from community members showing off their brand new handmade parkas. And honestly, they look amazing.

Through our sewing program, community members have been coming in to learn how to make their own parkas from scratch. We provide the materials, the sewing machines, and the space to work. And with the help of Siaja Narlik, who brings years of expertise and a whole lot of patience, participants are walking away with skills they’ll carry for a lifetime.

Jeanette Kasper couldn’t contain her excitement when she shared photos of her finished parka, calling it “soooo warm” and giving a big thank you to Ubluriak Society and Siaja for guiding her through every step. Ida Kavik also posted about the experience, sharing how grateful she is that her loved one now has a warm parka to wear, with just the fur and elastic left to finish up at home.

This is what it’s all about. People learning from each other, keeping traditional skills alive, and making something practical and beautiful with their own hands.

You don’t need any sewing experience to join. The program is open to everyone, and we’ll get you set up with everything you need.

Want to get involved? Check out our Programs & Services page or reach out to us directly. We’d love to see you at the next session.
