Youth Development & Leadership
Youth Development & Leadership
Young people in Nunavut are not the leaders of tomorrow. They are leaders right now. They have ideas, energy, and a deep connection to their communities that deserves to be nurtured, not put on hold until they’re older. This work is about meeting youth where they are and giving them the tools, relationships, and opportunities to grow into whoever they’re meant to become.
Why This Work Matters
Growing up in Nunavut comes with a unique set of experiences. There is incredible richness here — culture, land, community, and identity that runs deep. There are also real challenges. Limited access to certain resources, geographic isolation, and the weight of intergenerational hardship can make it harder for young people to see a clear path forward.
That’s where we come in. Not to tell young people what their future should look like, but to stand alongside them while they figure it out for themselves. We believe that when youth are supported, challenged, and genuinely believed in, they do remarkable things.
Mentorship
Every young person deserves at least one adult in their corner who isn’t a parent or a teacher. Someone who shows up consistently, listens without judgment, and helps them think through the big questions that come with growing up.
Our mentorship approach is built on long-term, trust-based relationships. We connect youth with mentors who reflect their communities and understand their experiences — people who have walked similar paths and come out the other side with something valuable to share.
· Youth are matched with mentors based on shared interests, goals, and backgrounds.
· Mentorship relationships are ongoing, not one-time interactions.
· Mentors receive support and training so they can show up effectively for the young people in their care.
· We create structured touchpoints alongside unstructured time, because real connection doesn’t always happen on a schedule.
Leadership Training Programs
Leadership isn’t a personality type. It’s a set of skills that can be learned, practiced, and built over time. Our leadership programs are designed to give youth hands-on experience making decisions, solving problems, working in teams, and advocating for things they care about.
We don’t run programs that ask young people to sit in chairs and take notes. We create experiences where they are active participants in their own development.
What our leadership programming includes:
· Workshops focused on communication, conflict resolution, and decision-making
· Opportunities to plan and run real community events and initiatives
· Exposure to different career paths, community roles, and leadership styles
· Space for youth to practice public speaking, facilitation, and advocacy
· Ongoing reflection and coaching so that lessons actually stick
These programs are designed to be accessible across the territory, and we work hard to make sure young people in smaller and more remote communities have the same access as those in larger centres.
Volunteer and Community Engagement Opportunities
One of the most powerful things a young person can experience is the feeling of contributing something real to the people around them. Volunteering isn’t just about giving back. It builds confidence, creates connections, and gives youth a sense of purpose that’s hard to find anywhere else.
We facilitate volunteer opportunities that are meaningful and well-supported, not just tasks that need doing.
· Youth are connected to volunteer placements that align with their interests and strengths.
· Every volunteer experience comes with guidance and a point of contact, so no one feels dropped in and forgotten.
· We recognize and celebrate the contributions young people make, because their time and effort deserve acknowledgment.
· Volunteer experience is documented in ways that support future employment and post-secondary applications.
Community engagement also extends beyond formal volunteering. We encourage youth to attend community gatherings, participate in local decision-making processes, and build relationships with elders and other community members across generations.
Youth-Led Initiatives and Advocacy
Some of the best ideas come from the young people living inside a problem every day. Youth-led initiatives are a core part of how we work, and we take them seriously. When a group of young people identifies something they want to change or create in their community, our job is to help them make it happen.
This looks different depending on the group and the goal, but it always starts with the same thing: listening.
· Youth propose and lead projects that respond to real needs they’ve identified in their own communities.
· We provide funding support, logistical guidance, and mentorship throughout the process.
· Young advocates are connected to spaces where their voices can influence decisions that affect them.
· We help youth learn how systems work so they can navigate and challenge them effectively.
· Youth-led work is treated with the same seriousness and respect as any other initiative we support.
Advocacy is a skill and a right. We help young people understand that their perspective matters, that they are allowed to take up space in public conversations, and that change is something they can actually be a part of.
Skills-Building Workshops
Not every essential life skill gets taught in school. Financial literacy, job readiness, communication, healthy relationships, cultural knowledge — these are the kinds of skills that shape how a person moves through the world, and they deserve dedicated attention.
Our workshops are practical and grounded. We build them around what youth tell us they actually need, and we update them regularly to stay relevant.
Workshop topics include:
· Financial literacy and budgeting basics
· Resume writing, job searching, and interview preparation
· Healthy relationships and communication
· Mental wellness and stress management
· Land-based skills and cultural knowledge
· Digital literacy and online safety
Workshops are offered in group settings as well as one-on-one formats, and where possible, we bring them directly into the communities where youth already are.
What We Hope For
We hope that every young person who comes through our programs leaves feeling more capable, more connected, and more certain of their own worth. We hope they carry the relationships they build here for decades. We hope they become mentors themselves one day, and that the cycle of support keeps growing.
Mostly, we hope they know this: their future is not predetermined. It belongs to them. And we will do everything in our power to make sure they have what they need to claim it.
Get Involved
Whether you are a young person looking to get started, a community member who wants to volunteer as a mentor, or an organization interested in partnering with us on youth programming, we want to hear from you. This work grows when more people show up for it. Come be part of it.
